Folegandros

Folegandros is the quiet revelation of the southern Cyclades, an island of bare hills and sheer cliffs just next door to Santorini yet a world apart in spirit. Seasonal daily ferries connect it with Piraeus, while short summer crossings link it with Santorini, making it an easy escape from the crowds. Its Chora is among the most dramatic in Greece, a huddle of whitewashed houses and shaded squares perched right on the edge of a towering cliff. From there a zig-zag path climbs to the church of Panagia, seemingly floating above the Aegean. Inland, Ano Meria preserves traditional farmsteads and a slower rhythm of life, while Katergo, reached only by boat, is among the finest beaches in the Cyclades. Unspoiled and unhurried, Folegandros is the anti-Santorini.

Highlights

  • Stand at the cliff edge in Chora, one of the most dramatic village settings in Greece
  • Climb the zig-zag path to the church of Panagia for sweeping sunset views
  • Explore Ano Meria and its traditional farmsteads scattered along the ridge
  • Take a boat to Katergo, a spectacular beach reachable only from the sea
  • Enjoy the unspoiled, quiet character of the anti-Santorini, right next door to Santorini

Travel Information

Best Time to Visit

Folegandros is a warm-season island: ferry connections are seasonal, so plan a visit between late spring and early autumn, when daily sailings from Piraeus operate and the summer link with Santorini makes island hopping simple. June and September are especially rewarding, offering warm seas and open tavernas without the busiest crowds, while high summer brings the fullest schedules and the liveliest evenings in Chora.

Port Information

Ferries call at Karavostasis, a small, low-key harbour on the east coast with a pebble beach, a handful of tavernas and rooms scattered around the bay. In season it welcomes daily arrivals from Piraeus along with short summer crossings from Santorini. Facilities are simple, so arrange accommodation and any onward tickets in advance during the busiest weeks of the season.

Transport Tips

A local bus links Karavostasis with Chora and continues across the island to Ano Meria, with services broadly timed around ferry arrivals in season. Taxis are very few, and much of Folegandros is best explored on foot along old stone paths. Small boats from the port serve beaches such as Katergo, which has no road access, so check sea conditions and return times locally.
