Kos

Kos is one of the friendliest big islands of the Dodecanese, and one of the easiest to reach: overnight ferries sail from Piraeus, daily connections link it with Rhodes, and very frequent boats hop across to neighbouring Kalymnos. All of them arrive at the harbour of Kos Town, right beneath the walls of Neratzia Castle. This is the birthplace of Hippocrates, and his legacy is everywhere, from the hillside Asklepieion sanctuary to the ancient plane tree where he is said to have taught. Just as memorable is how you get around: the island is largely flat, making Kos Greece's best cycling island, with easy rides out to Tigaki's long sands and Paradise beach, while the mountain village of Zia rewards the climb with famous sunsets.

Highlights

  • The Asklepieion, the ancient healing sanctuary of Hippocrates
  • The Plane Tree of Hippocrates and Neratzia Castle in Kos Town
  • Flat terrain and cycle paths that make Kos Greece's best cycling island
  • Tigaki and Paradise beaches for long, sandy swims
  • Sunset views over the Aegean from the mountain village of Zia

Travel Information

Best Time to Visit

Kos enjoys a long season. From late spring to mid autumn the sea is warm and the overnight boats from Piraeus and daily Rhodes links are in full flow. June and September are the sweet spot for cycling, with gentler heat on the flat coastal paths, while July and August suit beach lovers who want the island at its liveliest. Zia's sunsets impress in any month.

Port Information

Ferries berth in the harbour of Kos Town, directly below the medieval walls of Neratzia Castle and a short stroll from the Plane Tree of Hippocrates, the palm-lined waterfront and the town's cafes. Overnight ships arrive from Piraeus, daily boats connect with Rhodes, and small ferries shuttle very frequently across to Kalymnos, making the port a natural base for Dodecanese island-hopping.

Transport Tips

Rent a bicycle: the flat terrain and dedicated cycle lanes make riding the most enjoyable way to reach Tigaki, the Asklepieion and the beaches near town. A local bus network fans out from Kos Town to Zia, Paradise beach and the main resorts, taxis wait at the harbour, and cars and scooters are easy to hire for the island's farther corners.
