Poros

Poros may be the Saronic Gulf's most underrated escape, a green, pine-scented island separated from the Peloponnesian town of Galatas by a strait so narrow you could almost swim it, with small boats shuttling across constantly. Frequent ferries and fast boats from Piraeus make getting there simple, and the arrival is memorable: whitewashed Poros Town climbs a hillside crowned by its landmark clock tower, with sailboats moored two and three deep along the quay. This is one of Greece's great sailing hubs, and the waterfront buzzes with crews on summer evenings. Days here drift between swims at Love Bay and Russian Bay, strolls through flower-draped lanes, and a boat hop across to Lemonodasos, a fragrant lemon grove on the mainland shore. Easygoing and close to Athens, Poros charms quietly.

Highlights

  • The clock tower above Poros Town, with panoramic views over the strait to Galatas
  • Swimming in the pine-fringed coves of Love Bay and Russian Bay
  • The narrow strait crossing to Galatas by small shuttle boat
  • Lemonodasos, a hillside lemon grove on the shore across the water
  • A lively sailing scene that fills the waterfront with yachts on summer evenings

Travel Information

Best Time to Visit

May, June and September are the sweet spot on Poros: the sea is warm, the pine forests smell strongest, and the sailing crowd brings life without overwhelming the town. High summer is cheerful and busy, popular with Athenian weekenders and flotillas. Spring paints the island green and is lovely for walking, while the mild off-season suits quiet waterfront lingering.

Port Information

Ferries and fast boats dock right on the waterfront promenade of Poros Town, steps from cafes, tavernas and hotels. The harbour sits inside the sheltered strait facing Galatas on the Peloponnese, and tiny passenger boats cross between the two shores continuously from morning until late. It is one of the easiest and most walkable ferry arrivals anywhere in Greece.

Transport Tips

Poros Town is compact and best explored on foot, including the climb up to the clock tower. A local bus runs along the coast towards the popular beaches, and taxis, scooters and bicycles cover the rest of the island. For Lemonodasos and Galatas, hop on the small shuttle boats that cross the strait, while water taxis also serve beaches around the island.
