Samos

Samos, a lush green island of the northeastern Aegean, lies just a breath away from the Turkish coast and is reached from Piraeus several times a week, often via stops in the Cyclades, with summer links toward Mykonos as well. This is the birthplace of Pythagoras, and history feels close at hand: Pythagorio hugs its ancient harbour, while the Heraion sanctuary and the astonishing Eupalinos Tunnel are UNESCO-listed marvels of ancient engineering. Vineyards on the mountain slopes produce the famous sweet Samos muscat wine, and the green interior hides waterfalls and forested trails near Karlovasi. On the north coast, the fishing village of Kokkari mixes pebble beaches with waterfront tavernas, and day trips toward Kusadasi and Ephesus add an Anatolian twist to any stay.

Highlights

  • Walk the ancient harbour town of Pythagorio, birthplace of Pythagoras
  • Marvel at the Heraion sanctuary and the Eupalinos Tunnel, UNESCO-listed feats of ancient engineering
  • Taste the famous sweet Samos muscat wine at its source
  • Hike the green mountains and cool off at the waterfalls near Karlovasi
  • Linger in Kokkari fishing village or hop across for a day trip toward Kusadasi and Ephesus

Travel Information

Best Time to Visit

Late spring through early autumn is the sweet spot, when sailings from Piraeus are complemented by summer links toward Mykonos and the sea is at its warmest. May and June cover the island in greenery, ideal for the waterfalls and mountain trails near Karlovasi, while September brings the grape harvest and mellow beach weather. High summer suits swimmers and village nightlife in Kokkari and Pythagorio.

Port Information

Samos has two main ferry ports: Vathy, also known as Samos Town, on a deep bay in the northeast, and Karlovasi on the northwest coast. Ferries from Piraeus call several times a week, often routing via islands of the Cyclades, so check which port your sailing uses before booking accommodation. Both harbours sit right beside their towns, with ticket agencies and cafes nearby.

Transport Tips

Check carefully whether your ferry arrives at Vathy or Karlovasi, as the two ports lie at opposite ends of the north coast. Public buses connect the main towns, Pythagorio and popular beaches, though a rental car makes it far easier to reach the Heraion, mountain villages and waterfalls. Taxis meet arrivals at both harbours, and local boats offer seasonal excursions toward the Turkish coast.
